Review: Graduate program in acupuncture & Chinese medicine

Degree Offered: Acupuncture & Oriental Medicine (MAcOM) Format: Campus
Program Description: AOMA Graduate School of Integrative Medicine offers a comprehensive program of study leading to the degree of Master of Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (MAcOM). The program is accredited by the Accreditation Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (ACAOM), the agency recognized by the US Department of Education to accredit professional programs in this field. AOMA is the first stand-alone, single-degree granting school of acupuncture and Oriental medicine in the nation to be regionally accredited, and the first school of its kind to be accredited by the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS). AOMA graduates are eligible to sit for national board examinations administered by the National Certification Commission for Acupuncture and Oriental Medicine (NCCAOM). Successful completion of these examinations leads to certification in both Oriental medicine and is a prerequisite for licensure in most states that license acupuncturists. Additionally, AOMA's acupuncture and Oriental medicine program is approved by the California Acupuncture Board, allowing graduates to sit for the state examination for licensure in California. For the last 5 years, AOMA students have exceeded national pass rates on every module of the board exam. AOMA’s program engages learners in their own process of transformation from student to professional. The graduate program curriculum is made up of five different areas including acupuncture studies, herbal studies, biomedical sciences, the clinical internship, and integral studies (foundational theories, practice development, mind-bodywork and Asian bodywork therapy.) AOMA is one of the few professional programs in the nation that includes traditional Asian mind-body practices such as tai chi and qigong as an integral part of the curriculum, and is one of very few acupuncture schools to begin clinical education for students in the first term. AOMA’s herbal program is one of the most comprehensive in the nation, with education in herbal theory, identification and function of more than 300 herbs and the combination of those herbs in formulas to restore states of health. AOMA’s curriculum includes the study of integrating acupuncture and Oriental medicine with Western medicine and students are able to see and participate in the practical applications of this integration through AOMA’s partnerships with major hospital systems and local community clinics. AOMA students learn from faculty who are engaged in clinical practice as well as having expertise in their academic field. Many of AOMA’s faculty are internationally recognized for their research and teaching, publish and present findings internationally, and conduct and participate in training programs around the globe For more information about the graduate program, admissions, and student life, please visit the AOMA website www.aoma.edu.
